SCSI-1 and LPT

Hi,

I got a scanner from a friend today, it's an Epson GT-7000 with SCSI-2 interface.
He thought it was LPT, but it's SCSI-2. Now the cable that he gave me has the 50-pin SCSI-2 plug on one end, but the 25 pin LPT on the other.

Now a friend of mine once had a SCSI scanner, and he had a SCSI card with this 25 pin SCSI-1 port. He also told me that LPT is SCSI-1 or at least derives from it. He said he never tried to plug the SCSI Scanner into the LPT port and couldn't tell me whether it'd work or not.

So, that's the question. Does LPT really derive from SCSI-1, and if so, would a SCSI-2 Scanner work there or do I need the SCSI card. I guess I do need a card because of the terminator, right ?

Some info which may help:
1. there is a 25 pin scsi cable end ... it requires a scsi card/adapter to work. It does not go in the LPT port.

2. there is also a 25 pin scsi parallel adapter ....the originals were "Trantor" adapters ... they converted the scsi to parallel; plugged into the LPT port and did not require a separate scsi adapter. Other makers have manufactured similar products later ... tho they are rarely seen now.

3. Most commonly, older scanners worked off the parallel port ...but then they were not scsi scanners ... but parallel port scanners.

1) So if it fits into the LPT port, then it's indeed the adapter and not a SCSI cable ? My friend said he has a SCSI card with a port that looked like the LPT, so I guess it will fit on LPT as well.

2) What do they look like ? Simply with SCSI on one end and LPT on the other ? Coz my cable looks like that.

3) I know that LPT Scanners existed. But mine is SCSI-2

I'll respond to questions as best I can ...

the scsi connector should be attached to the scsi adapter, not to the Parallel port. (both have 25 pin connections appearing similar)

2) What do they look like ? Simply with SCSI on one end and LPT on the other ? Coz my cable looks like that. (they look about the same...SOME scsi cable adapters also have a place to connect the parallel cable)

3) I know that LPT Scanners existed. But mine is SCSI-2 (then cable should be connected to the scsi adapter connector - not to the parallel port)

To further complicate matters, there is/was a SCSI2 cable that does not need an adapter - they were fairly expensive at the time (near $200) and not very commmon ... but if you have one of those it would connect to your parallel port and have a connection on its side for you to attach the printer cable as well.

You cannot plug your scanner and existing cable into a LPT port and expect it to work. That is in fact a SCSI cable you have, not an adapter cable. You need a SCSI card with a DB-25 external port such as an Adaptec AVA-2906.

I'm sure you could find a cheaper offbrand card somewhere, I picked the Adaptec only as an example.
