I am not wanting to actually replace a faulty socket with a new one, I want to remove one from an old socket 7 board i have lying around and put it into my old Tyan Tomcat IIIS i have laying around and turn it into a Tyan Tomcat IIID. Everything seems to point to them both sharing the same design except the IIIS has one cpu, which is what i have, and the the IIID has 2.
Everything else appears to be there for it to be a dual cpu setup. I am just after some hints and tips from anyones who may have removed and replaced a socket before and how they found the best way about it |

I doubt if the board with the single CPU has ALL the components to support a second. Also, unless you have a really good PACE or Metcal soldering/desoldering station ($500 - $1000) don't even attempt removing a socket. Go buy one it'll be cheaper and less hassle. I've done rework on main boards, it's not easy. You usually end up tearing up the board even with the right equipment.
