Enum trick with XP?
Hi people!
Quick question time again. I searched and searched the archives here and I know I read it somewhere, but danged if I can find the thread I'm looking for. It's about moving an old hard drive to a new machine. I know the ENUM trick only works with Win9X systems, but the one I'm trying to do this on is using WinXP. What's the best way to make the old hard drive work with the new hardware in the new machine so I don't get that BSOD boot error? Basically I'm asking what's the WinXP equivalent of the famous ENUM trick?

No enum trick with XP. Just do a repair/install.

right, the repaire install will do just that and not change any of your files or data.
but you will need to redo all the updatesfor xp |

Thanks for the quick reply, PR! I think I spent too much time in the sun today though coz my brain's not thinking clearly tonight.
 For the repair/install, you're saying boot from the XP CD and do the full repair install, not just the repair console thing, right? Or am I confusing the two and they're the same thing? (I haven't had to use the repair functions much, can ya tell? ).

No, they are not the same, just skip the repair console and once the setup finds the prior install you will get a prompt asking if you want to repair the existing install.

Yeah bailey, I figured I was going to have to download the service packs again. (Not looking forward to that since I'm on sloooooow dialup

It has been posted before.....
If the system worked before you decide to move the H/D to another pc or switch the M/B... You should go into the device manger and Un-Install the IDE controller and re-install the Window Xp generic driver ( If you haven't updated it since loading the Drivers just "roll back" the driver) This will let you move the drive and it will still boot...The exception is if it's the same chipset it is not neccesary.... If you use a Sata drive you must use a board that uses the same sata driver (Ie Silicon Image 3112) If your new board the has say a Silicon Image 3114 well then you will have to do the repair... But I'll bet if you uninstall the Sata driver and install the new driver BEFORE you reboot it may work....but haven't tried it....
