3 pin molex fan. where do they go?
First of all i'd like to say that im new here and im new also when it comes to pc hardware.. I know some, but not a lot.
Anyway, I got 3 80mm fans for my case not realizing that the power connection is a 3 pin molex according to the box it came with. I've never seen this before and i dont have anywhere to plug them. As much as possible, i dont want to return these fans to newegg coz i'd really love to have them installed. What's the easiest and most efficient way to install them? Do i have to buy anything else? Any help would be appreciated. |

On the motherboard there are the connectors for the fans, though unless its a cpu fan you kinda want to avoid plugging in fans to the mobo as some draw more power the the connector on it can handle.
Just get some 3 pin to 4 pin adapters, http://svc.com/3pinto4pinad.html BTW, welcome to the mech

A cpu fan sits on top of your heatsink, which sits on top of your proccesor. A case fan (which is what you have) simply mounts to the inside of the case. You want to back fan(s) to be exhaust, front intake, and if you have one the side intake and top exhaust.
Though in some cases in which the heatsink was bought seperatly from the processor, case fans are mounted to some of them. Having case fans will help keep the pc a little cooler, though uness its overheating due to poor airflow wont have any effect on preformance. |

ok, now i feel that my case is somewhat "stupid" coz you mentioned the back to be exhaust and the front to be intake. the front of my case has 2 holes for fans but im now wondering why there is a tranparent cover right in front of it. how could it intake air if there is a covering? and the cover seems to be fixed with the whole front side of my case..

What case do you have? Sometimes you just need to figure out how to take the front face plate off to get the fans mounted (and sometimes its a pain in the arse to take it off). Though it may not seem there room usually the front face plate is off the case by about in inch, so it has air to suck in.
Im off to bed, but ill try to take a quick look at this thread in the morning before school and see if i can help ya out with it, (if no one does by then). |

there should be a way to remove it...you may have to take the front of the case off to get to it or... It may draw air from the bottom...

Hmm, can you take a pic of it? Or just try to explain some features on it. I assume you either built it or had it built by someone and thats its not a pre-made one (dell, compaq..ect)?

If the front bezel is plastic, then it probably snaps into the metal frame. Take off the side covers and look around the inside towards the front. Should be able to see the black plastic coming through holes in the metal. May have to take both sides off to get to all the snaps.

the way that is designed you can just mount the fans inside and it will work...
to remove the plastic you will have to remove the front cover....you will need to remove both side covers and un-fasten the snap-clips that slide thru the front metal.... there may also be a few screws holding it on too... |

alot of cases are styled just like that with different front panels or windows or whatever. i have one thats almost exactly similar. to mount those front fans, you will need to take off the plastic front panel of the case-- look towards the front inside of your case, there should be 3 screws on the left and right of the case going up and down. unscrew them and the front panel should be loose--pull it of but be careful about the wries connected to it (power button, reset switch, LEDs, etc) then u can screw in the fans from there

Woohoo! Thanks everyone! I finally got to install the fans.. BUT what sucks is.. the screws for the fans i got didn't fit the fan. i had to use paperclips instead for now.. Is it safe? If not, what other alternatives can i use? what kinds of screws do fans usually have. Mine has a screw that is too short to go throught the thickness of the fans.. It sucks!

Most fans screws are quite tight going in for the first time. If screws came with the fans, they fit, just might be tough.
Glad all is running well, and i see you got the front fans in. Looks good

Its not that. Its the screw that it too short for the fan thats my problem. They came with screws, but with screws that dont seem to be able to be used for it. I might just look for some longer screws and use a washer or something to lock it up.
Thanks guys! Btw, while im asking for help.. do u guys know any links of how to backup ps2 games without needing a modchip to be able to play it? Is it possible? Woohoo! PCMECH RULES! |

hmm what do ya mean the screw is too short for the fan? Sorry, could you explain it a bit.
As for the ps2 games, because its not legal we try to keep topics like that off the forum. |

To screw the fan to the case, you hold the fan against the chassis and insert the screw in from the other side of the sheet metal and screw it into the plastic of the fan body. The screw doesn't have to go all the way through both holes of the fan body, just one.
Can you post pictures of your problem? I don't quite understand how the screw can be too short. Cricket

Ok, I'll try to post some pics when open up my case again. I just dont want to use paperclips for holding the fans together. Hahaha!
FLG, what i mean is that the screws are too short to go through the fan because the fan is too thick for it. And also the screws are too fat to go through the fan holes. It just doesn't seem right.. I'll post some pics later.. Thanks guys! |

In my experience, the screws are always fatter than the fan holes - largely because the plastic is not 'threaded', and thus the screw thread has to have material to bite into.
As a result, you have to press quite hard! Freakitchen

Yep most fans screws are hard going in, trust me..if it came with the fans...it fits. As freakkitchen said, your pretty mutch "threading" the fan as you screw in the screws so they are tough going in.

So where do i put the holes through if thats the case? From the inside or the outside?
Im guessing from the outside because we wouldn't want pointy metal sticking out of our cases right? Just wanna make sure. Im going to put my machine into surgery again. Heehee! |

Screw it from the outside, just make sure you have the fan in the direction you want the air to flow before you screw it in so you dont have to do it again. Back, exhaust. Front, intake.

Dudes!!!!!!!
I dont know why this happened! Since yesterday(September 27, 2005), when I boot my pc it will turn on for like 1 sec then it shuts down. I only get to make it boot up when I take of the case cover with the built in fan. Why is this happening? Do I need some power gadget to prevent this? Help again. Thanks! |
