Installing CPU Chip & Thermal Paste
Hi. I am a bit nervous about installing my new P4 3.4ghz CPU. This is my first build and am installing everything on my own. I don't want to do anything to fry the board or chip. I bought some thermal paste because I heard how the cpu can run hot and that this paste can help cool it. My question is where do I apply the paste and how(in any shape or design or something like that)? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I am a noob and I want to be careful. Thanks for any help and please cross your fingers for me.

Apply a thin layer of thermal paste with a q tip or toothpick, make it an even coat remember too much will make it an insulator which will cause the temps to rise and it may overheat.

First, did you buy an OEM CPU? or a retail version? The retail version comes with a heatsink and fan. With the OEM version You supply the HS/fan combo.

Do I not need the thermal paste if I bought the retail version?

No, on the bottom of the heatsink that is retail you should see a little white square, that is preapplied thermal paste.

What type of thermal paste did you buy?

I bought Arctic Silver. A tech friend of mine just told me to spread in on top before I attach the heatsink. I told him that people on a message board told me not to and he said that you are all wrong. I honestly believe you all before him, he is jealous because my build blows his away. So I don't put any on at all?

Right, on the bottom of Retail heatsinks, there is already a thermal pad, which does the same thing as thermal paste, what we are saying is if you remove that thermal pad and use your Artic Silver, then you will void the 3 year warranty on your CPU.
You are better of just using the thermal pad, they work fine. |

Also do not use both paste and pad. It is one or the other, not both. Using both will lessen heat transfer and can cause overheating.
