not sure what to use under heatsink

i just got a dynatron heatsink/fan combo for an athlon 3200+, the bottom is copper but has no thermal pad, it came with a tube of white silicone compound, is this what i should use? if so do you just put a dab on the square on top of cpu or do you spread over entire square?

Just apply a very thin layer to the top of the CPU core (the raised part) and the contact area of the heatsink (the area the CPU core will make contact with, not the entire underside.

Is this a AMD Athlon 64 or a Athlon Barton? The 64 has a metal cap covering the CPU core, the Athlon Barton has an exposed core.
