I'm attempting to install a modem on an NT4 Server but can't seem to get it working. I was orignally trying to install an older 33.6k modem and could not get it to work so I purchased a 56k Winmode but still cannot get it to function.
I've changed PCI slots, reinstalled the drivers, checked out the BIOS settings. Everything seems fine but when I try to creat a dial up connection it says that there was a hardware failure and refuses to even dial. RAS seems to be set up correctly also. I've also tried setting it up on COM 1 and COM 2. Anyway, I'm running out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated. FYI, the motherboard is about 3yrs old but was brand new out of the box when I built the computer a couple of months ago. I've got several slots occupied by other cards which work fine so I think it's unlikely that the motherboard is at fault. I don't know why, but I always seem to have trouble installing modems on NT machines. Thanks! Last edited by Wanabe; 06-20-2001 at 09:20 AM. |

Don't even try to install a PCI modem on a NT box, much less a Winmodem. You want an ISA hardware based modem with jumpers or an external serial modem. Plug and play on NT is a total joke. All the NT boxes I work on get USR Sportsters (model 5687 for internal ISA). I usually shut off Com 2 in the bios and jumper the modem to Com 2 IRQ 3 and it installs fine.
We did get a Conexant HCF PCI modem working in an NT box at the shop, but it was a real pain and performed poorly. If this is going to be a server, you need a top quality reliable modem that doesn't suck CPU cycles like winmodems do. |

Thanks glc.
I had a feeling that dealing with PCI was a big part of the problem. This is a dual boot machine on which I've got NT and W2k loaded on two partitions. Maybe I'll install the modem from the W2k side and then I can simply transfer any downloaded files to NT if needed. Thanks! |
