Question Hard Drive Capacity question

Hello,
I have a seagate baracuda 160 GB SATA HD. The hard drive is not showing the right capacity through windows right now. ( I also have a safely remove hardware icon up in my toolbar that refers to my harddrive) I have a windows XP pro disk that doesn't have SP1 or SP2 on it as I know about the capacity limit before SP1. When I installed the HD I installed XP pro, partitioned the available hard drive space into two equal parts, then installed SP2 from the net. I have not partitioned my other drive yet.

What should I do to get the full capacity of my hard drive in this situation?

Thanks

What capacity is showing? Windows XP without any service packs cannot handle volumes larger than 137 GB (127 GB in theory) per partition.

If you installed the drive before installing SP1 or SP2, that explains the original limit. Now that you've added SP2, you should be able to see the rest of the hard drive in Disk Management. You can format that extra amount and use it as a separate partition. You have to format it first in order to see it in My Computer. If you want to combine the partitions, you'll need to use a 3rd party software like Partition Magic.

I'm having the same sort of issue. I installed a 250g Seagate w/out SP1 or SP2. It was only showing 127g and my 40g backup wasn't showing at all. I downloaded SP2, and from what I was told, SP1 would automatically be installed. After installing and verifying, I checked the hdd and it still shows 127g and my backup still doesn't show. BTW, after doing that, I can no longer see pics or borders in OE. What else might I do to solve the problem?
Normally, I find what I need w/out making a post, but I'm stumped. Thanks for any help that is offered!

AMD XP 1700 (1.4ghz)
XP Pro
Svc Pk 2
768 meg Ram
Gigabyte kt400
Master: Seagate 250g
Slave: Maxtor 40g

If you can bear with creating two seperate partitions, that would be the easiest and cheapest solution. In other words, you would have two drive letters even though both are pointing to the same physical drive. If you would like to have a single partition and expand the partition, you will need a third-party partition manager such as Partition Magic (which I believe is owned by Symantec right now).

Okay perhaps I spoke too soon, I have a couple questions.

1) The safely remove hardware icon is still up on my toolbar in the lower right hand corner of windows. It is asking me if I want to safely remove my hardrive. How do I get red of this?

2) and this is wierd. It may be completely unrelated and probably is but I was hoping somebody could address it. After reformatting my hard drive I shut down my computer last night. Upon turning it back on tonight, I noticed a loud and wierd clicking sound like a fan was catching on a wire or something. I figured out that it is the chipset fan. I wiggled it around a bit and now it isn't making the horrible sound but it is alot louder than it used to be. Could this have been caused by the reformatting? Perhaps the chipset was working really hard and the fan was trying to cool it off and just spun itself too hard?? Anyway I have an Epox 9npa ultra board. And is it a pain or even a possibility to get a replacement chipset fan?

thanks again

2) I doubt it, just an odd coincidence. You might be able to contact the manufacturer...Or get an aftermarket passive heatsink for it.

You won't get rid of the "safely remove.." icon. Because your hard drive is SATA, it is considered "hot swappable" and this initiates the icon.
