DVD burner question
i have the asus a8n-sli premium mobo, i'm getting 2 sata hdd (a raptor and WD 7200rpm 16MB), AMD athlon64 4000, and a ge-force 7800gtx...
my question is this...i want to get the PLEXTOR PX-716A. however, it is IDE. is this a problem? what is my best option for a DVD burner. money is not an issue. i just want to make sure i get a good quality burner that's compatible with my rig. can i mix IDE with SATA, or should i get a SATA burner? as you can tell, i'm obviously a little confused about the whole issue...ANY help would be greatly appreciated. |

That mobo has two IDE channels and a couple of SATA ports. It's up to you as to whether or not you get an P-ATA burner or a SATA burner. No, they will not interfere with each other at all.
An IDE optical drive will allow you to choose the drive of your preference while there's really only 1 SATA optical drive around these days. HOWEVER, it's the drive that you wanted in the IDE flavor. Here's your IDE flavor and here's your SATA flavor. These are both the drive you specified although I couldn't find OEM versions so I provided links to the retail versions. The price difference is $4. For that price difference, I would personally go for the SATA only because IDE cables, even rounded ones, are still so much bulkier. In short, the drives' performance will be identical.

You can definitely mix the two. You have 4 available SATA ports as well as 4 IDE connections (2 on each cable). SATA is a little faster, but I dunno if burners can utilize that difference in speed, really.

so, what you're saying is that i may as well go the full SATA route, if performance is identical and the cost difference is minimal.
any thoughts on whether is should even get this particular model, or is there a better DVD burner i should consider? thanks!!! |

Yes, if the cost difference is minimal then get SATA, simply because of the benefit of better airflow that you mention.
Plextor makes probably the best burners on the market - and if you can afford one, you should certainly get one! Freakitchen
