Internal to external HD question

I have an 7200RPM 60 GB IBM Deskstar HD that I recently turned into an external hd. Is there a way to set it so that it doesn't keep spinning all the time even when it's not in use but powered on?

Is there any particular reason why you would like to have it run that way? I am not sure, but I don't beleive that something either hardware/software is out there.

As soon as power is fed to the harddrive itself, the spindle motor is the first thing that recieves power. There is no way of stopping it from spinning up if there's still power to it.

Windows power management cannot control external drives. If the drive has power, it's gonna spin.

do you close all programs before trying to remove the drive? check antivirus software. do you actually see HDD activity? Try turning off "drive indexing" its meant to make searches faster but also means the hdd is accessed frequently to update the index (i think)

In Device Manager, under properties for each Removable Hard Drive, select "Optimize for fast removal". With this option selected, you will no longer have to click "Safely Remove Hardware.

1. No. Don't try this with flash memory devices.
2. No. Wait for all activity to stop.
