USB PCI card help
hello,
i installed a USB/Firewire PCI card, and when i try to use a USB external hard drive, it freezes my computer. all the drivers are installed, and there are no yellow ! in the device manager. all drivers are updated. device manager does not report any conflicts. i have the latest updated windows stuff, including SP2. the device manager seems to read and list the card properly. there is however, a device manager listing for an unknown device. some more info: P4 3GHz HT 800FSB ASUS P5RD1-V mobo (latest BIOS) 2GB RAM ASUS EAX550 256MB graphics card installed in PCI-Express 16 slot (working fine) Firewire Card in PCI 1 (working properly) USB/Firewire Card in PCI 2 (causing the problems) PCI 3 slot unoccupied i have also tried moving the erring card to PCI 3, but same thing. i do not know what shared IRQ is, nor do i know if it applies here. any help greatly appreciated. |

Here's my advice. Remove the card. If you need more USB ports than the motherboard offers, get an AC powered USB hub. If you need extra Firewire ports, daisy chain the devices or get a second Firewire-only card IDENTICAL to the existing one.
You have 2 different USB chipsets - the onboard ALi/ULi and the card's Via - and I bet they hate each other. Last edited by glc; 10-01-2005 at 05:53 AM. |

thanks glc -- you were right on the money!
i bought another card with an ALi chipset, and wouldn't you know it -- it works fine now. |
