I think this may have been asked before, but whats the difference between the A64 cores? I've seen Venice, Clawhammer, and San Diego. Whats the difference??
Thanks |

I'm not an expert on AMD cores (I'm an Intel person), but I think the main difference is the process type and architecture.
Venice Process Type: 90 nm (Has 512KB of L2 cache) San Diego Process Type: 90 nm (Has 1MB of L2 cache) Clawhammer Process Type: 0.13 µm (130 nm) Power usage and heat dissapation vary with different process types.

is there a "best" one though? I plan on overclocking and gaming a little, so I'm looking at single core
Thanks |

What budget are you working on? Aim for the smaller process, the Venice or San Diego.

Im looking for something around $250-300
3800 Venice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103570 3700 San Diego: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539 Also, whats a nice motherboard (either SLI or not). I first planed to get an Abit, but since their quality will be less than it was.. I had second thoughts Thanks Last edited by Winnipesaukee; 10-09-2005 at 09:53 AM. |

As for the two CPUs you listed, both would do fine. I would say San Diego because the effect of a larger level two cache is more noticible than a 200Mhz bump. kram

I'd go with the San Diego and an Asus board - or a DFI if you want to play and tweak and are willing to deal with idiosyncracies.

You would be surprised Kram. On the P4 cache can help a lot, but on A64's clock speed is much more influential.
