Touch Pad problem in Compaq

Weird thing happened today.
The Compaq Presario 2500 laptop touch pad was functioning properly until i decided i needed a reinstallation to get rid of spyware, etc..
So I went ahead and backed up every piece of info on my HDD and used th Quick Restore CDs that came with the computer to recreate the HDD image that was factory set.
Now everything is cool excpet that the touch pad doesn't work. I hooked my USB mouse and it works no problem. I check with BIOS to make sure that the settings are OK, and yes they are. The touch pad power button is "ON". What happens when i use it is that the cursor just moves for about 1 second and then stops. I use the mouse for a while before it again works for a second or so!!

Any ideas?

Have you looked in Control Panel->Mouse

Have you looked on www.hp.com to see if there are newer drivers?

control panel applet doesn't add anything.
I got to HP site and got the latest driver, won't install, gives error message at the end of the setup telling me to contact the touchpad manufacturer site

A Discovery!!

OK, i got frustrated trying to fix the touchpad, and already decided to give up on it when I found out something interesting, the touchpad works perfectly, as long as the network cable is unplugged, once the LAN is connected, the touchpad seizes to function.

I checked the control panela nd found that the LAN card and the touchpad have different IRQs, so what could be it?

Have you tried plugging a mouse into the USB port and then plugged in the network cable to see if it still doesn't work??
