75 GB Raptor is LOUD!
I just installed a 74 GB Raptor in my system today and man is it loud! Its fine when it is not being accessed and just sitting idle, but when being accessed it just has a loud mechanical grinding sound. It is so loud that if there is no background noise you can hear it in another room! It does not make any clicking sounds and it seems to be working just fine. I just wish it was not so damn loud, I wanted my build to be somewhat quiet and my 120 GB Seagate and external WD drive are not nearly as loud as the Raptor. Are they supposed to be noisy drives? Or did I just get a loud one?

I'd run their diagnostics from the web site just to make sure there isn't anything wrong with the drive.

Raptors usually make a high pitched whine, not a grinding sound. I'd do like doctorgonzo mentioned and test the drive. I don't think that sound is normal.

I tested it and it passed, the noise still bothers me though, the drive may be fine, I have had a pretty noisy WD (not as loud as the Raptor though) in my Dell for around two years now and it still works fine. I wonder if I should try to RMA it? And I wonder who I would go though WD or Newegg?

It would be pretty hard to RMA it if it passed the diagnostics, I think. You may try contacting Newegg anyway, it doesn't cost anything to ask!

Is it just the normal head seek/platter access noise? I've never heard a Raptor up close so I'm not sure if what you're hearing is normal. I do know they make a high pitched whine though.

I'd consider RMA'ing it if it is that loud. My Raptor (36.7 gig) is no louder than my Seagate hdd, and they are supposed to be louder than than the 74 gig model.

Yeah I am going to give Newegg a call tommrow and see what they say. If they wont RMA it then I will try WD and if they wont then I will just wait and see if the drive dies, it does have a 5 year warrenty and I back up my data weekly so I am not too worried about it.

I just got off the phone with Newegg, I am RMA'ing it. There customer support is really good; I just hope my new drive is not loud. The 74 GB model is supposed to be pretty quiet, from what I have read WD made it more quiet than the 36 GB model and the fact that two people (and many on newegg reviews) say the drive is fairly quiet make me think something is up with it. Even if it continued to work fine for a while, I don’t know if I could live with the noise everyday, because my PC is otherwise pretty quiet, you cant even hear the fans unless your head is about a foot away from it.

Uhh, well I just installed my new one today and it is just as loud! I don’t know if Newegg has a bad/loud batch or what, or maybe I am just too sensitive/anal about hard drive noise. I think I am just going to return it for a refund and get this drive instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701 is much bigger, has a 16 MB cache and is cheaper. I am not refunding the Raptor solely because of how loud it is, also because I notice very little difference between it and my 7,200 RPM Seagate. On the Raptor things run a bit smoother and programs seem to install a bit quicker but its nothing drastic, I think they are a bit overhyped.

I think some people do hype up the Raptor a bit (maybe to make themselves feel better about their purchase)...their performance is a bit better than a 7200 RPM HDD, but nothing Earth shattering. Cricket

I just requested an RMA refund for the drive. It sucks that I have to eat return shipping again (I have now wasted a total of $16) but I would rather pay the $16 and get a drive that I am happy with. When I am not complete satisfied with a product I usually live with buyer’s remorse and I hate that. The Raptor was not all I thought it would be, sure it smokes every drive on paper and in benchmark tests, but for my computer the hard drive is clearly not a bottleneck and having a 10,000 RPM drive just does not make enough of a difference in performance. If I was satisfied with the performance increase then I probably would have just lived with the noise, but the noise plus performance that does not live up to my expectations = unsatisfactory product for me. Plus now I don’t have to worry about waiting for that $20 rebate on it.
I am either going to go with that WD I linked to above, or wait and see what comes out, I think Seagate is due out with an equivalent drive (something in the 250 GB area with a 16 MB cache). The bigger cache should offer a small performance increase, comparable to what I saw with the Raptor, plus I will have over 3 times the capacity, SATA 2, a quiet drive and some extra cash in my pocket. To me that is justified and I should have gone with that drive in the first place, but I bought into the Raptor hype and needed to see what it was all about, well now I know, you live and learn. Maybe there is a reason no other manufactures have jumped on the 10,000 RPM SATA bandwagon. In addition if lets say a 15,000 RPM SATA drive comes out I could purchase that for my OS, games and apps and dedicate my larger capacity WD to media duty, where as if I had a Raptor it would become somewhat useless because it is really not big enough to be a media drive, and storing media on it does not even take advantage of its speed anyway. You think the Raptor is noisy - you oughta hear the 15krpm SCSI drives.
