Is there any hope?

An uncle of mine brough me his PC. Apparently a power surge had killed the PSU as well as the motherboard. I tested the PC with my own PSU and it effectively was dead. However, I'm not sure about the processor. If the PSU killed the mobo, would it have killed the CPU as well? I have no way to test it as he has an old P4@1.7Ghz and I run AMD Athlon in my PC.

He's going to build another one with what he can salvage from the current so saving on a new processor would certainly be helpful.

Is the P4 Socket 423 or 478? Have you tested any of the other components like opticals, hard drives, etc? If his processor is Socket 423, it would probably be better just to upgrade him to a 478 or 775. I dont like to be the bearer of bad news, but I have seen a power supply nuke almost an entire system. When the new system is being built, make sure you get something from a good reputable manfacturer such as Antec, Fortron, Sparkle, E-Power/Tagan, XClio, or Enermax.

Not sure which socket it uses but the fact that it uses PC133 memory should give a fair idea of the model of the CPU. haven't tested the HDD. I'll do it later but I sure hope it works because I'm counting on not having to get a new HDD.
