Computer Shut Downs

Well it seems like everytime I do something, my computer will just shut off. When I play a game, it will shut off about 60% of the time. When I go to burn a cd, it will not shut off BUT when I burn a dvd video it will shut off about 95% of the time. When listening to Itunes, it will shut off about 15% of the time. Those are the only times when the computer will shut off.

But When it does shut off, I have to wait about 15 mins because it will not boot up again. Fans come on...but no beeps or nothing. Then after 15 mins I turn it on and it will boot up. Built this computer about a year ago and had no problems until about a month ago...every week it seems like it's shutting down more.

I'm thinking it's the power supply quitting on me. It's not overheating because everything was fine before. Don't think it's the videocard, because why would it shut down when I'm burning a dvd? I just want to know because I don't want to waste money buying a new power supply only to find out thats not the problem.

What kind of computer is this? Home built or name brand?

What are the complete system specs? We need to know brand and model of each component.

First thing I'd try is running the computer with the sides off and have a small fan blowing into the case. If the problem goes away, you have a cooling issue.

It's a homebuilt computer...built it about a year ago with no problems until a month ago. Have a pentium 4 3.2 ghz cpu, sapphire radeon x800 video card, 1gb ram, 350w enermax psu. Already have a fan blowing into the case, problem still exists.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and down load the diagnostic utility and test the hard drive.

Might want to test the RAM too.

Also check for dust buildups. Especially in the heatsink...

Welcome to PCMech.

It depends what your problem is, as to where to place your thread. For instance if you need assistance in choosing parts for a new build, then you would put your new thread in the Build Your Own PC section. Just choose where you think an appropriate place is, and if it is drastically wrong then a moderator will move it to the correct category.
