Dell 8200 Sound Issues after reformat.

Hey all,

A friend of mine had me reformat their Dell 8200 PC since it was loaded with viruses and spyware. I reformated, and reinstalled Windows ME. However after the reformat I couldn't seem to get the sound to work.

I have an image attached of the Device manager, and what drivers are missing. A Belarc system report is also available if you need it for reference to any of the other components. I would post it but the .htm is not supported, and the .doc is to big.

The computer does not recognize that the Sound Blaster Live 512V dell edition card is even installed. I know I obtained the right drivers for it. Any help would be very greatly appreciated, I know it is probably very simple but I cant seem to figure it out, they have been without their computer for several days.

Here is the link to the computer support page on the dell site. http://support.dell.com/support/topi...ct_support_hub

The link above has all of the computer specs and other info. If there is anything you need let me know.

Thanks for your time, I hope to solve this asap.

Did you use the driver disk that came with the pc? And or go to Dell's web site and get the drivers?

Yes, Sorry I forgot to mention that. I Installed all of the applicable drivers from the dell CD. I would look on the website but what driver do you look for for those 2 devices? I thought windows was supposed to just recognize them? The only driver I can think of for those would be chipset, and that is installed already.

Thanks

Here's a handy little tool to identify devices that appear without drivers in the Device Manager. Unknown Device is also out there in another form called Unknown Device Indentifier. Some controversy exist regrading ownership and rights but since both are Freeware you can use either.

Well, thank you for that PR. I managed to track down the right driver with the info that utility gave me. Now, when I go to install it it needs the DRIVER5.CAB file from the windows CD. I looked and searched the ME cd for the file but I cant seem to fid it. Does anyome know where I could get it or how?

Thanks again

Hi,
Did you get your sound working yet? If not, and the drivers seem to be loaded fine, there is one issue that I have come across after a format. Do you have digital speakers or analog. If digital, you need to go into the control panel and sound options and check the box for "digital output". Windows default is for analog. Wasn't sure if that was your problem or not, but wanted to give you one more angle.

Hey Linda,

No I did not get the driver installed, I still need the DRIVER5.CAB

I am pretty sure the speakers are analog, but if I get the drivers installed and it still won't work I will give that a try. Thanks for the advice

Just an idea. Try removing the sound card and reboot the system. Then shut down, reinstall it and when the New Hardware is found use the Dell Resources disk as the source for the drivers. Good luck.

If there's nothing in c:\windows\options\cabs, you need to browse the ME CD.
