xp pro dont't see external hd

my desktop computer for some reason do not see my external hard drive even do my laptop can see it with no problem. When i connect the hard drive to my comp it tells me it found new hardware and that's it. When double click on my computer it's not there nor is it in computer managment

What type of filing system is on the drive? It could also be that the port you are using for it on the desktop machine is toast.

finally solved the problem but still confused. I put it different usb port and hard drive worked, but that usb port that i try to put before is still works when i put in usb hub etc. Confused why hard drive woudn't work with it.
