RAM compatibility?

Will any DDR400 ram work with both my Dimension 2400 and my upcoming "CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard"?:

I plan on upgrading my Dell's RAM to 1gb of DDR (2x 512), and later using the same RAM in a new system using the mobo mentioned above.

Thanks
Matthew

I'm not quite sure if ANY DDR400 will work with your dell but it will with your mobo unless otherwise specified (not too sure about "non-ECC" or "unbuffered". those are terms someone else may be able to help you with).

if you are looking to upgrade the RAM in your dell, go to www.crucial.com. you can imput your model number (Dimension 2400) and they will list all of the RAM that is compatable with that PC. i believe you can only buy it through that site or through dell - which is much more expensive.

I checked crucial, and they don't show any modules that are compatible with both systems,

That's not necessarily an ironclad means of determining compatibility - you will notice that all Dell modules at Crucial are CTxxxxxx - that's for their compatibility guarantee. It's the same for all name brand *computers*. They MAY be the same as their generic DDR part numbers (CTxxxxxZxxx) but you just do not know. The Dell modules MIGHT work in the Chaintech and vice versa, but again, you just don't know.

In my experience, it's just not wise to put generic ram in a Dell. I *have* done this in the past, and it *has* worked, but not EVERY time. I have also put factory ram out of a Dell into a generic *motherboard* and it *has* worked - again, not EVERY time.

Well then, I won't take the risk

Thanks you all!
