Weird SATA Problems

Ok...where to begin...

ASUS 87nx mobo 1 gig 3200 two SATA drives one aprox 100 gig then bought another aprox 200 gig (SEAGATE)

had my machine for some time now aprox 3 years with no problems, then about 2 months ago trouble with my main C:\ drive ..weird boots blue screens ect. Checked my admin system event viewer and had disc read errors. Then machine would not reboot. Took machine to local computer guy and he said hard disc crapped out. Got my data back with a NEW Seagate hard disc Then he mentioned to me that my data drive (2nd disc) was not getting good reads and was getting hot. He recomended since they were both under warranty that I should have them replaced. To make long story longer I gave him my data drive as well. So both disc's were sent to Seagate for warranty rebate and I bought a brand new c:\ drive so I could get my PC up ASAP.

Ok ...so I get both disc's back and i figure I could use one for data. I connect warrantied disc and about two weeks into install I get same activity and condition that crapped out my main drive (Brand new C:\ drive is working just fine by the way). High CPU usage spikes on reading disc mouse activity freezez. Disc error on System log in event viewer. So I figure it's got to be another bad disc from the factory (refurbished, rebuilt, warrantied disc's by the way) so I put in the other warranteed disc.....guess what? Same damn thing!!! Same CPU spikes same read errors !! Could it be that I got two crappy return disc's from Seagate? New C:\ drive is working fine. Checked all cables and connections. Disc's are formatted and partitioned and read fine on bios boot up. What am I missing? Thank you all for your replies

this is odd. maybe seagate re-sended you the same hardrive that failled!

i would of thought of a virus, but since you got it formated, i guess thats not the case, here is my segestion : take a hard-drive from another computer that you already have (that you know it works). and plus it in your pc. if it works, that means seagate has a problem with their HD if not, it could be your mobo

not sure but do you have a good quality power supply in your computer? Sounds unlikely that you would get a bunch of crappy drives in a row like that. instead of sending the drive back test it with seagate diagnostics to be sure and in a known good system if possible. also run memtest to rule out the memory.

How bout bios upgrade..??? Haven't upgraded bios since I bought it. Just went On ASUS website and got nervous.. I heard you can get in some deep doo doo if you don't upgrade to the right bios. Is there any software that helps a dummy like me through that nightmare?

I think ASUS boards come with a simple to use windows interface. You might poke around on the CD and see what you find.

I doubt a bios update would fix that kind of problem. Have you run SeaTools on the drives? Are they overheating? Might want to make sure all your system fans are working and free of dust bunnies - including the air intake areas behind the front panel.

Success!! Problem solved

Ran checkdsk /F on both disc's and stil had same result. CPU would Spike to 100% and freeze mouse control and operation control.

Then I Looked inside of PC and found a extra ide power cable with thicker wire and tried new connection. All looks OK now I love a happy ending

A power cable? I would keep an eye on that power supply if a power cable was having problems.
