Can Hitachi hard drives be trusted?
I am looking for a drive to replace my second noisy Raptor (already RMA'd one), I also feel that the Raptor does not provide enough real world, every day performance gain over a typical 7,200 RPM drive. I think I am going to get this drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701 large capacity, 16 MB cache, good price and is supposed to be quiet. But Hitachi has a few tempting drives, thing is I really dont trust them, the only companies I really trust for hard drives are Seagate and WD. Are people having good experinces with the new Hitachi drives, or have they not been around long enough yet to come up with a valid relabilty statement? Also does anyone have that WD drive I am considering?

The latest review of a Hitachi Deskstar suggest they can be trusted : http://techreport.com/reviews/2005q3...0/index.x?pg=1
I think you're still remembering the days when IBM made Deskstars and they produced the "Deathstar" debacle. They eventually sold the division to Hitachi and the reviews have been pretty good since then. Here's Tomshardware most recent review/comparison of all major drives including Hitachi : http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20050927/index.html

Our builder has been using Hitachi SATA drives for a while now, and they seem to be reliable and fairly quiet. I still don't trust their IDE drives after the Deathstar debacle. To be honest, the only SATA failures I've seen so far have been Western Digital JD series drives, but I haven't worked on too many SATA setups yet. I've worked with some Raptors, they have all whined but I haven't seen any that clatter. Seagates have been almost deathly quiet. No Maxtor experience yet. WD Raid Editions (SD I think) are workhorses but noisy.
