can i install a new motherboard?

Alright, my computer came with a motherboard I dont wish to keep. The question is, if i buy a new one does that require me to buy other components?

If you are talking about the Compaq in your sig, it probably be hard to do. Not sure if that case is in a standard ATX format, same goes for the PSU.

Well you may not be able to use the case again, and the power supply may be proprietary, meaing it may be different than a standard power supply and won't work with a new motherboard.

so let me get this straight. if i buy a new mobo i might also have to buy a new case and psu. i understand the psu part but why would i have to get a new case?

Sometimes they place the holes (for stand-offs and screws) in different locations. Maybe, maybe not. I suppose you could always get the new mobo and PSU and see what happens, if it doesn't fit then you could order a new case, if it fits, well then you won't have to buy a new case. Personally I would ditch the case and go for a full-ATX, with micro-ATX you will have limited upgrades.
