Fan controller noise

I just got a fan controller from the UPS guy that I ordered. It's a PC System Maxx fan controller...

When I start turning the knob down (probably around 10V) there's a clicking/buzzing noise and the further I lower it, the louder it is. I read in reviews before I got it that it made noises, but I got it anyway since it was only $12...I'm just wondering what is making the noise? and will it hurt anything to allow it to make the noise (ie, is it going to burst into flames?)?

Thanks,
blue60007

Anyone?

Also, on low settings the controller isn't providing stable power, I noticed my LEDs pulsate a bit.

I would replace it...on www.svc.com they have a real nice sunbeam unit for $9.99.... it will handle 20w per channel and go from all on to all off...

I just bought the Chromatic windmill for $27.00 and man I love it...

OK, thanks for the suggestion.

New idea - I'm hopefully going to get around to ordering a new power supply tomorrow, it's an Antec and it has leads coming from it that are thermal controlled - for your fans. So as the PSU heats up the voltage increases. Now I'm thinking I should be able to hook this into the fan controller's power connector and control fan speed that way - since the voltage is already reduced when it reaches the controller, I shouldn't have this problem.

My only concern is that the "fan only" connectors only supply +12V and a ground. I don't think the fan controller would use the other two would it? Don't know if it puts power back through, like if you jerry-rigged a 7V mod.

If I get what your saying...the PSU has that feature and will control the fans and not the controller...

Right, the controller acts as a hub for the fans.

After re-reading you previous post...I am not sure that will work...but if it does let me know...

I think the F/C is relying on a constant 12v so it can them meter v's to the fans...If you hook it up via the PSU thermal control then the fans will already get less than 12v and so would the controller...so the controller would start off with less than optimum v's and then try to control them from there....

My understanding anyway.... heck try it and post back let us know how it goes....I think I would just hook the fans the PSU thermal contrlled leads and see how that works????
