Mitsumi Floppy/Card Reader
ok i have had a mitsumi floppy/card reader in my build for a couple months now. ive never used the memory card slots before. so i try a SD card and nothing shows up. i was never sure of where to connect the reader to so i did a little searching. seems that even though it looks like a USB connection it needs to go to a floppy controller on the motherboard.
i am at college now and have not brought my motherboard manual. i have the MSI nForce 4 Ultra Platinum motherboard. if someone could correctly locate me to where the floppy controller is that would be greatly appreciated or direct me to where it needs to correctly be connected. |

I have the same drive, but with a different motherboard. There will be separate signal cables for the floppy data and for the USB reader data. The floppy will have a standard ribbon cable that you will connect to the floppy controller. However, that has nothing to do with the SD card reader. There will be another small, round cable with a flat connector on the end. This must be plugged into one of the USB headers on your motherboard. Your board manual is probably available online.

That board has 3 usb connectors located next to the sata connectors, 2 in one row and a third above the other two,

the black cable only has 4 holes to connect, while the USB connectors have 9 pins. where in the USB connection would the 4 pins go to correctly connect?

The headers have nine contacts because each is a double-header... pardon the expression. You have a row of five pins and a row of four. That "extra" pin in one row is just that, an extra. If you count that one as pin number 5, then pin number 1 is the USB +5 volt contact, and pin 4 is the USB ground. The connector from your card reader should have markings on it.
When I said double-header, I meant that you can connect two USB devices to each header; one across the "upper" row of contacts, and one along the "lower" row. You can use the "spare" ninth contact for orientation, because it isn't used for anything else. Last edited by Science_guy; 11-10-2005 at 08:44 PM. |

well i opened the comp up and tried fixing it tonight. some progress but not much. i tired to plug it in properly and finally got it to recognize something. new problem is XP isnt recognizing the device. its advertized that if its installed on XP it has a driverless install. the problem is that it says it doesnt have a driver.
went to mitsumi website, couldnt get the driver there. found another site, tried to install it, restarted computer, then computer wouldnt go past the logo for my motherboard. i detached device cable restarted and it turned on normally. replugged it in while computer was on with driver apparently installed and still doesnt find the driver. any suggestions? correct driver? any help appreciated. |

If the connector is attached correctly and XP doesn't "see" the drive and auto install, I'd say you have a defective unit. That idea is validated by the system lock up. No additional drivers should be necessary for a card reader.
