Installing additional fan and noise factor...

One of the computers that I built needs an additional fan. Of course the case is not setup for another fan. There is space for it. There are two fans at the back (one fan is in the PSU the other unit is just a fan) none in the front. I will have to drill holes in the case in order to install the fan in the front. Has anyone experienced any problems in doing this?

I am also concerned about the additional noise once I install the fan in the front. I am thinking about using Silent X or some other manufacturer that builds low noise fans.

Any comments and or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

Put in the biggest fan you can (like a 120mm fan), and find one with lower RPM ratings...

Thanks blue60007!

We are on the same page! WHEW!

I am wondering should I use rubber washers between the fan and the medal to dampen the noise/vibration

Thanks!

That's not a bad idea, that could make a difference.

Btw, there are a lot of guides out on the internet that show you the steps to cutting your own fan holes that you might want to look over.

If you're concerned about noise, check the decibel rating of the fan you're thinking of using. Look for a rating under 25dB. The Vantec Stealth or Panaflo L1A fans are quiet running fans.

When you cut out the front fan port be sure you take everything out of the case first. You don't want metal shavings getting all over the components.

Just curious, but why do you "need" another fan?

Thank you for the pointer! I found one set of instructions that I understand needless to say I will be using them. I found several sets of instructions that were quite complicated. All I want to is to drill a couple of holes in the metal and put the fan in place.

Long time no talk to Cricket!
I've heard about the Vantec Stealth and Panaflo L1A. I remember reading about them when I was deciding what was going to use to make up my computer. If I remember correctly the Vantec Stealth models are relatively cheap compared to the Panaflo L1A the Panafol is thicker than the Vantec. I will definitely check out the link you have provided.

Thanks for asking! This will make me sit down and think twice about going through all of this. The reason that I need the additional fan is because the Maxtor drives are hitting 43 Celsius. If I remember correctly they can go up at least another 10° but I'm starting to get uncomfortable. The last thing I need is to find my backup drive fried.

Hi cdplayer. I wouldn't be too worried about 43C. Heck, I've been running 5 Maxtors for a long time (just added a 6th last weekend) and run just stock Antec Case fans. 43 is about the temp of a typical fluorescent light bulb.

TwoRails you just saved me from the anguish, pain and suffering attempting to install a case fan in the front of the box! For now I will keep a close eye on the temperature of the hard drives.

Thanks!

Yeah, they're usually about half what the Panaflo L1As cost.

No, they're the same...the computer I'm working on right now has Vantec Stealths and they're the same thickness as my Panaflo L1As...25mm.

Actually, I'm pretty sure there are some 38mm Panaflo L1As.

Those are 120mm fans. The ones I'm comparing are 80mm.

Hey Cricket!

The fan am talking about is the Panaflo FBA12G12L. (Forgive me for taking so long to reply I had to find the fan first! ) This fan is
>thick< !
I used this fan for about a week. It does not have the sensor so that the CPU knows that the fan is rotating. In its place is a 120mm Silent X .

The link I was talking about was place by the site not you. My bad!

Cheers!

I replaced the 3 stock fans on my Lian-Li case (2 x 80 mm; 1 x 120 mm) with a pair of Panaflos and a Vantec Steath. Things are much quieter now, and internal temperatures didn't change.

Extra cooling

Ok, My system only has the power supply fan, its a athlon 2800+, there is only one port on the mother board to plug a next fan so would any of those recommeded here be sufficient in keeping my system cool.

When I wanted to mount a fan in my older case and there were no holes for one, I simply dabbed a few droplets of 3M Emblem Adhesive on the top corners of the fan unit and attached it to the chassis. It's quite firm and requires no tools, and the good part is that if you want to remove it, it doesn't take much force to wedge it out because you used so little adhesive.

Good stuff IntegraGSR!

This would eliminate having to deal with metal shavings inside the computer cabinet! All of the sites that I went to that talk about adding a fan in your computer box always mentioned the woes of metal shavings.

By the way, how much does this adhesive cost and were can I purchase it?
What size fan is stuck on the inside walls of your computer box?
Based on what you know about the adhesive does it matter what size fan you use?

Thank you for the information IntegraGSR!

According to Asus Probe, motherboard and CPU temperatures range from 35 C to about 38 or 39 C, depending on activity.

The picture isn't too glorious but it shows you how large a fan can be held up with just a dab or two of the adhesive. It comes in a little black bottle that says "Plastic Emblem & Trim Adhesive" that I'm sure you could find at any auto part or hardware store. Its specialty is plastic to metal, so this is a perfect application. It shouldn't cost more than $10 and for normal applications should last quite a while.

When I applied it, I actually sat the case on the side it was attached to for a small amount of time so gravity would hold it in place, as it is a little more consistent than a hand. I then turned it back to its normal stance and it's on there firmly and flows air quite nicely.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Thank you IntegraGSR for taking the time to place the link. I like the idea of using a little of the adhesive knowing that "a little dab will do ya". So this adhesive is used to hold the trim on cars correct? If this is the case I know where I can pick this stuff up!

Cheers!
