Is the System fan necessary?
Hi
Im currently putting together my first build. On my Gigabyte 81915GMF mobo there is a Sys_Fan socket. I already have the CPU heatsink/fan set up, my graphics card has a fan and the rear case fan is connected directly to the power supply. Do i need anything connected to the Sys_Fan socket or do i have enough cooling already? My power supply doesn't come with a lead to fit that particular socket. Someone told me that i dont even neccessarily need the case fan attached as the PSU and CPU should be adequate??? Thanks guys My spec: 2 x 250GB SATA HDD 2GB RAM 580W Tagan 2Force PSU 630 3.0G Intel P4 s775 128mb Gigabyte Geforce PCX5900 Terratec DMX 6fire soundcard Firewire PCI card Windows XP Home |

I'm pretty sure that socket (3-pin?) is for a case fan. If you do have a case fan plugged into that, the fan will run off the mobo power; and if you have a feature with your mobo (like AMD "Cool 'n Quiet"), then the mobo will control the speed of the fan based on the temperature of your system. Nothing needs to be plugged into it. If your case fans have the 4-pin PSU connection, you can aslo plug them in that.

I'd certainly advise leaving that rear fan connected to remove the hot air from your case.
Best thing to do would be to monitor your system temps using a programme like Everest (www.lavalys.com). If they're too high for your liking, you can always install more fans. The next obvious place would be an intake fan in front of your hard drives, if your case supports one. Freakitchen

That SYS_FAN is for a case fan that has a 3 pin connector. However most (at least decent ones) case fans come with 4 pin molex connectors (connected directly to the power supply) or even both.
To answer your question, you don't need to hook anything to the SYS_FAN connector - just there if you need it.
