Lockups and the Blue Screen of Death
I have a Compaq Presario 3440 CA Athlon 64 3000+ with 512 ram, 80 gb hd that started locking up a week or so ago.
I was unable to try a system restore as the computer would not boot up at all. I attempted to reinstall Windows, as much as I didn't want to, but that too was a bust. I did the quick HDD test and got a badchek sum error and am now in the midst of running the long test that Windows has onboard. I was also online via my other computer with Compaq and downloaded their drive test but could not get it to bootup to run the test. Has anyone out there had a similar problem and what did you end up doing. I suspect that the hard drive is toast but am not sure. Regardless, the unit is still under warranty, forever as this is a multi-user unit, there is information that was not backed up that, though not vital, will be missed. Help, anyone???? |

Sorry to say, it sounds fried to me. I had a similar problem with a laptop HDD. Exact same symptoms (compaq presario laptop too.. hmm..) And I ended up having to replace the drive. I'm sure thats not really what you wanted to hear but... ^^; If I were you, I'd put that warranty to use.

Was the hard drive a Fujitsu? Compag mainly uses Fujitsu hard drives in their computers. Fujitsus aren't manufactured as well as they used to be.
