Dual-Channel Memory

lets say i get 1 gig of memory, 2 512 sticks. then in about a year or so, one gig isnt enough. i then get 1 stick of 1 GIG memory, with the same brand, same timings, speed, etc, and my motherboard has only 4 dimm slots. will all the memory run in dual channel?

if not, say i get another set of the same exact memory instead of the 1 gig stick. so when i upgrade to 2 gigs, i will have 4 sticks of 512, with my mobo only having 4 dimm slots. can this hurt the motherboard, having maxed out the dimm slots?

i've heard some people say that, but i dont know if its entirely true. You guys have so much knowlege, much more than me, so i'd like to hear some input.

No. You need matched pairs in matched slots to achieve dual channel. Maxing out your dimm slots shouldn't hurt your mobo, though some makes/models have been known to have instability problems when the dimm slots are full. Make sure the ram is fully compatible with your mobo. The one down side of using the 4 sticks is that you will need to run them with a 2T command rate instead of 1T, which will give you a slight performance hit in some application.

would the Asus A8N-SLI nForce 4 motherboard work for 4 sticks of 512 megs of ram without killing it or damaging or slowing the comp down?
