Motherboard dead or BIOS needs updating?
I tried to put a basic 10/100 network card into a Compaq Presario 5360. Somehow, the hard drive is now corrupted, and there seems to be a motherboard or BIOS issue. I'm not so worried about the hard drive, because I've got an extra one anyway. What's confusing is that the machine will boot, I can view the video signal, I can even access the CMOS setup program, so the keyboard works as well. But when booting, the machine does not attempt to boot from any drive, and then reports that it cannot find any operating system. The CD-Drive light stays on permanently, but the floppy drive is never accessed. I imagine that the motherboard is OK if I can view the video signal and access the setup program. Is the problem with the BIOS? And if so, how can I flash it or restore it if the machine won't boot from or access any drives?

Did you remove any cables to install the network card? Check all cables and connectors. If that is one of those Presarios with all the cards in a removable cage, make sure the cage is seated fully into its rack and motherboard slot. Whatever happened, you probably didn't get it back together completely correct or knocked something loose - it happens all the time.

Glc-
Thanks for the quick response. I think I've been pretty thorough in putting everything back in place, but I'm certainly going to check again. I've removed and replaced almost everything on the board to try to find the culprit, to no avail. Would a loose connection on the board prevent the drives from being recognized? |
