DVD Media

I just bought this external DVD player from Newegg(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106991) and I am conflicted on which media to use. It will be for making backups of my DVD collection, and I wanted to know what media will last the longest, which media is the best to use ( DL, DVD-R, DVD+R, etc.), and what media is best for making full exact copys of the DVDs. Thanks for your time and help.

I use internal Lite-On burners exclusively, and I've been very happy with them. On their site, you can download a little program called BookType Utility. With it, you can burn DVD+R discs as ROM discs. I've found that when burning movie DVDs as ROM, they work in every player new or old that I've tried them in. So, +R discs are the way to go. I don't think there's much difference otherwise. Dual Layer just means you can hold twice the data, but the media is much more expensive at this point.

Any media made in Japan should give you excellent results. I prefer Fuji (Made in Japan) but have had great results with Verbatim and Ridata.
DL discs are still quite expensive.

You can find it HERE at the Lite-On Utility Download page. You may want to update the firmware on that drive as well. Not sure if it affects the utility at all, but it will allow the drive to recognize more types of media.

I've had good success with Ridata as well.

Edit: glc = to the point, me = wordy and slow

Verbatim, Ricoh, and Taiyo-Yuden are the top brands. Check out the DVD Media forum at AfterDawn.com. HERE is a nice list of different brands and who they are actually made by.

Stick with discs manufactured by MCC (Mitsubishi Chemical), TY (Taiyo-Yuden), and Ricoh and you should be fine.

one last question, most DVDs are about 7.5 GBs (atleast mine are) anyways can those be compressed with DVD shrink to make smaller size to fit on the 4 GB discs. Thank you for your help.

Yep. That's the very purpose of DVD Shrink.

If you keep the menus, yes. It'll be like the original, just with lower quality due to the compression.

Or you can throw out the menus and just keep the movie. The choice is yours.

Since that burner is Dual-Layer capable, you can purchase DL discs that will hold the full movie, menus, and extras.
