Memory Problem on FIC PA-2013.
I have an FIC PA-2013 MB with an AMD 450 CPU and 128MB of memory.
This has been running great sine fall of 99. When I tried to add another 128 MB it did not register in the computer. The memory self-test stopped at 128 MB and the Windows 'Settings' option showed the same. I can remove and add back this new memory - still 128 MB. The computer works with one or both of these memory modules present. The second modules just does not have any effect. If I replace the 'old' with the 'new' memory, the system memory self-test fails. The system just sits there and beeps. Looks like the memory and the MB is incompatible. I have tried this with two different memory modules of of the same type. I tested my PA-2013 with a 'cheap' stick of 256MB and it worked. The 'old' memory is (according to the sales slip): 16x72-8 SDRAM (P 1) PC100 ECC, Premium Asc: 21362 (?) W/WPROM 440BX Chip Set. (This was $200+ back in late 1999...) The 'new' memory is (according to the sales slip again - both times): 16x72 PC100 MJ Reg 18CHP D1 T 128 MB 168 pin DIMM ECC Asc: 33840. (This is also premium memory) The 'old' memory is no longer in their computer. The 'new' memory module is about 1.3 cm taller than the 'old' one and it contains a small 1/4cm x 1/4cm x-tra small chip in the center between the bottom and the row of memory banks on the chip. (It looks 'different'). The people at the store (not the worlds greatest experts) can not tell me what the problem is. Their computer says the memory should work. Is there a known incompatibility between the FIC PA-2013 MB and the 'new' memory? If so, how can I tell what memory will work on my MB? What do all these info about the memory tell us? (Asc: xxxxx, MJ, D1, T ????) Thanks, ADBerg... |

Hmm - both modules are ECC ram (which is a waste unless you are running a server and can be slower than conventional SDRAM) but the new module is "registered" and TOTALLY unnecessary and probably incompatible.
Can you get a refund on that dimm? If so, do it, and sell off that ECC dimm, and go to crucial.com and order the correct memory for that board - it's $26.99 for a 128 meg module, shipping free. Don't try to mix types - ECC must be used only with ECC, and vice versa. You could probably even use cheap generic memory in that board - i just picked up some 128 meg generic PC100's for $18 each. |
