Question Thermal grease - help required!!!

I've got a new MSI MOBO, Althlon 1.4Ghz 266FSB chip and GlobalWin fan (ref my
previous post on DDR setup).

I have noticed a number of comments in this forum on Thermal Grease - it is
also strongly advised in the MSI MOBO manaul.

I've never used Thermal Grease before - but this is only my 2nd system build.

Can someone give me some info on Thermal Grease - specifically which is the
best brand, and where I get buy this in the UK.

Thanks for your help, PiP UK.

Thermal grease fills in the microscopic voids between the processor and heatsink providing better heat transfer. The best kind is arctic silver, not sure where you would get it in the UK.

Seems like most folks prefer the Arctic Silver. I don't know where you can get it in the UK but stick around and you'll get more info. I use "heat sink compound" from Radio Shack because it's easy to obtain. The substance provides for better heat transfer from the cpu to the heat sink as compared to the "thermal tape pad" which needs to be screaped off when using the "grease".

Check here for dealers in the United Kingdom. Arctic Silver is BY FAR the best at what it does. Here's there man page: Arctic Silver

LO M8,
You might also want to consider lapping the bottom of the heatsink. I just picked up a globalwin myself, and even though it LOOKS flat it really isn't.

Use 200-320 grit to start with, on a FLAT surface. A piece of window glass, or a small mirror will do fine. get it flat with the starting grit, then go to 400. Sand across the grain on every grit change, so you know you have gotten it all the way across. Next comes 600 or 800 , then 1000, then 1500, and if you really want to get crazy and go for a mirror finish, 2000. Use water also while your doing it, and flush the sandpaper every nown n then to get all the sandings out of the way.

Once your done, rub a SMALL amount of the arctic silver on the bottom of the heatsink and apply a very thin coating to the processor. .03-.02 mm should do fine. Less is more with this stuff. [wink]

Cool

Baitcaster where do you find the 1000 and 1500 grit. I mess around making knives and the 1000 and 1500 would be a big help in obtaining mirrow finish that now takes so long on a buffing wheel.

Best place to look, is an auto paint supply place. Maybe an auto parts place might have it also. Ive found that my local auto suppliers only stock to 800 grit. Worse come to worse, go to an auto painting place, and sweet talkyour way into a sheet or 2, or find out where they get it from.

Mike Breck recommended to me http://www.overclock.co.uk to get Arctic Silver, got it within 2 days. Superb prices and superb delivery times. If I need to get another heatsink or any more Arctic Silver that's where I'd get it from

And no I don't work for them
