Trouble adding dvd drive
I had an extra dvd-rw drive lying around and decided to add it to my Dell 370 precision desktop. I already have a dvd-rw drive in my comp but there was one more space for a drive so i thought i would hook this extra one up. I connected the drive with the same IDE cable as my original drive and connected it to the power supply. I tried restarting my computer and i got a message saying: "Drive 4 not found. Parallel ATA, PATA-0 (PRI IDE Master)"
I am not really sure what that means, i continued to let my computer boot up and i went to my computer and none of the dvd drives were being recognized. I opened the case back up and disconnected the second dvd drive, and restarted the comp. It started up just fine and it recognized my original dvd drive. I have no idea what the problem is, any suggestions? Thanks! |

Sounds like the DVD-RW drive you added may have already kicked the bucket before you hooked it up. One bad drive can cause the entire channel of drives to malfunction or not be detected at all. It could also be a power issue. Try hooking up that same drive to another computer. If you get the same symptoms, it's the drive. If you don't, it's a PSU issue.

Gizmo, let's look at a simpler item first - jumpering.
How is the *original* drive jumpered? If CS, jumper the new one CS. If master, jumper the new one slave, and vice versa. |

I tried connecting the new dvd drive alone and it worked fine, the problem seems to be when i try to connect them both at the same time on the same IDE cable. Any suggestions?
Thanks! |

Look at the jumpers as GLC suggested. It sounds like there is a conflict there.

On the back of the drive, next to where you plug in the power and data cables, there should be a two parallel rows of pins with a plastic jumper on two of the pins. See this: http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/wd12...umper_pins.jpg
Also, somewhere on the drive, there will be a little diagram showing you where to put the jumper to select either Master, Slave, or Cable Select (CS). If your original drive is jumpered as CS, then jumper the new drive as CS. If the original drive is jumpered as Master, jumper the new drive as Slave. If one drive is jumpered as CS, and the other is jumpered as Master, they won't be able to work on the same cable. |
