2x512mb or 2x1Gb for Ocing
Forgive me I kind of asked this in another thread about Ocing my P4P800 but I did not recieve a response. Would I be better off with 2x1gb DDR500 @3-4-4-8 or would 2x512MB DDR533 or DDR550 at 2.5-4-4-8 be better? I can't find anything faster than DDR500 in 2x1gb. I am Ocing my rig right now and I'm at 240FSB@1:1 and have run 265FSB@3:2 and I'm trying to go faster @1:1.

Yeah, I think 2GB of RAM as opposed to 1GB would be a better "overclock", especially for large games.
However, if you can fit 4 of the 512MB modules in, go for it.

Would 4 512 sticks be better (because of (double) dual channel) or 2-1 gig sticks (dual channel)

Maybe all these other overclockers that are telling you to use more ram have had different results that I've had. I found that I was able to OC farther using 2 x 256 than 4 x 256. It seems the more memory you install the bigger the load is on the Northbridge. This can lead to instability. Even with a custom Northbridge hsf installed w/AS5, the 512Mb combo oc'd farther.
Now, you may need more memory to play certain games but overtaxing the NB may be the result. I guess what I'm saying is be prepared for a possible letdown when you install all that new memory. Good luck. |

I too have heard that you can OC further with less RAM. Some even take out as much as possible to get a higher bench.
