Need new printer

My printer (Cannon) is about dead. Won't print color anymore. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive ink jet printer that will work in DOS as well as Windows?

I have an HP 932C Deskjet, works very nicely, I think you can get them for around a $150.00- $160.00

I bought a HP Deskjet 720C about 3 or 4 years ago. It has performed flawlessly ever since!!

I also recomend HP, mainly because with each cartage you get new print heads. That is probably what is wrong with your Cannon. Also HP cartages are a snap to refil if you are into that sort of thing and have the time to mess with it.

I specifically mentioned the 895C because of its DOS capability - the 720 does not work in DOS and I don't think the 932 does either. They will work in a DOS *window* but not in true DOS.

Have had 4 Epson printers. They are cheap now I have a 777 for less than $80. Great print resolutions, up to 28,800 dpi. Everthing else is second class to Epson printers. Great Support and warrenty exchange program as well. They exchanged one for me when it was a couple of weeks out of warrenty and the problem with it was my fault (used to refill cartridges and it cloged the nozzels)

bozo: I will partially agree with you. Epson's print quality is second to none, but they are very cheaply built - they are mechanical and electronic nightmares.

Maybe they are cheaply built, that's why they can also sell them cheap (like I posted earlier I have had 5 Epson printers, and have had no problems with their physical makeup). I have not had any technical nightmares like the last post refered (only once with the last one I bought, a slight install problem which their tect support quickly resolved). And also they bent there warrenty policy, and exchanged a printer (overnight & they paid the S&H charges) when I was three weeks, OUT OF WARRENTY, and this one was my fault. No questions asked. I was impressed!! Using a 777 now, and had a 740 previous and originally Epson Stylus color. If your like me, and don't do a huge amount of printing, but want superb quality, at times, their is no comparison. Epson rules the cheap(to buy)but quality printers market. And no, I do not work for Epson.

Well Bozo, look at it this way. I do a fair amount of printing and have one HP for over 3 years at a cost of little over $100.00 and I refill the cartages. You state that you don't do much printing but have had 5 at a cost of about $80.00 = $400.00. Thanks, I'll stick with HP for now.

Well I understand why you used the name "confused". Where in my post did I say that I have worn out 5 Epson printers? DA! I have two computers myself and my four daughters all have computers. 4 of the 5 Epson printers I have bought are still in use. Epson Stylus Color is 6 years old and still works like new. A couple of weeks ago my parents bought a HP printer. I spent 2 hours with tect support from HP, trying to get a new HP printer to quit gobbling up paper. They had me do everything, including washing the rollers. Only to be told at the end to send the printer back. So we did and went to computer store and bought an Epson

Yep - I see them all in the course of my service business and the only consumer grade inkjets I have any respect for any more are HP's. If you want the (acknowledged) print quality of an Epson, be prepared to deal with a lot of hassles keeping it running. You get what you pay for.

You didn't attack me personally - I was referring to the comment directed at Confused. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

ACPI = Advanced Control and Power Interface - this is power management and resource (IRQ) management. It's a good idea in concept, but can cause problems because it usually piles all your AGP, PCI, and USB devices up on the same IRQ and *supposedly* manages the interrupts itself. This does not always work as advertised, so I prefer disabling it.

Back to the original post - do your Epsons have true DOS compatibility or are they strictly GDI printers? That's the issue here......the original poster stated he needed DOS compatibility. I have an HP 882C - and it is NOT a true DOS compatible printer but it will print in a DOS window. The 895C is true DOS compatible - it has 4 megs of ram onboard and will work with almost any DOS Deskjet driver - such as a 560C.

My Nec 870 has been great at printing in Dos - but its starting to shriek intermittently and sounds like a cat getting declawed! Since its less than 15k pages use, I'd like to get it repaired. I've done a Google search but have not seen anyone who claims to do Nec laser repair. Any suggestions?

ronaries: next time, please start a new thread for a new issue, this thread is almost 3 years old.

Sounds like you need a new toner cartridge and/or drum. At the price of these supplies, you may want to look at a replacement printer, they are far from inexpensive.

I have an HP Deskjet 882c and I love it. However, after reading the latest printer ratings in Consumer Reports and dropping by Best Buy I can't recommend the new HP printers. They are extremely slow compared to the Cannons when printing photos and the photos aren't as good quality. The Cannon I860 and I560 absolutly blew me away. They print blindingly fast and with unmatched quality in photos and laser printer text. Go see for yourself. I was skeptical at first and thought I would never buy anything but HP. My next printer will either be a Cannon I860 or I560. I think it is unfotunate that HP has such a monopoly over the printer market. In stores like Office Max they have nothing but HP and a couple Lexmarks. It is hard to find other brands even when they are much better.
