I'm using an Intel LGA775 Pentium 4 3.2Ghz 540 processor that I pulled out of a Sony VGC-RA820G desktop. I've tried the processor in 2 different ASUS motherboards, and it reacts the same as if there was no processor in it at all.
Is there something proprietary about the processors used in Sony desktops? I always thought a Pentium was a Pentium. Or is there any other reason that a processor pulled from another PC won't work in a new motherboard? If this is already covered in another thread that I have missed, just let me know which one it is. Apologies if I'm repeating an old topic, but everything I've found here talks about buying new chips, not about re-using old ones. System I'm trying to build here: Intel 3.2GHz Pentium 4 540 processor (pulled from a Sony Vaio desktop) ASUS P5WD2 motherboard Thermaltake Silent PurePower TT-420AD(DUAL FAN) ATX 420W Power Supply CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory ASUS EAX800/2DTV/256M/A Radeon X800 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card |

I would think the processor is interchangeable. The problem might be the Sony heat sink/fan assembly. If you are using the Sony hsf, the new motherboard may not recognize that the fan is plugged in if the wiring is different.
