PC Card Slots not working

I have an Compaq LTE 5300 that was given to me. Original OS was Windows 95. I updated to Window98. It has an Pentium Processor with 32MB of Ram.
It works fine. The only problem that I have is that I can not get it to recognize the PC card. When I open the PC Card Interface in Control Panel, it just says the slots are empty. I have tried to everyway I know how to install the PC Card Adapter (Netgear 32bit CardBus Notebook Adapter).
I know the PC Card is good because it worked in a different Notebook computer.

Any suggestion to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Are all the driver's installed for the PCMCIA slots? Also is your Netgear wireless adapter compatible with Win98?

One thing to keep in mind, unless it's Windows 98 SE (SECOND Edition) it is probably not going to work at all. Double-check the version number of your PC's OS by right-clicking the "My Computer" icon and choosing Properties... just to be sure.

I check the system properties and Windows 98 second edition is the version install. I checked the device manager and I see " Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCMCIA controller" listed under PCMIA socket. I do not know if there should be other drivers listed there for the PCMCIA slot. The device manager says that the PCMCIA device is enabled and working.

I am about to give up on this and see if I can install a Linux OS on here. I do not have any experience with Linux but since I can't get this connected to my home network it is of no use to me.

Well, after some do thought about this problem, I decided to check the Compaq website for any information about this problem. I found the answer on the HP Support website. Their were white papers about upgrading to Windows 98 on the LTE 5000 family notebooks and it was not recommended to upgrade to Windows 98. The reason was that the bios would not fully work with Windows 98. I did find an update for the bios, so my next step is to try and the update the bios.

I will post my results when I get a chance to try this out.

I would like to Thanks everyone for their suggestions.
