DVD won't boot w/ fresh install
I helping a friend who just bought a used laptop. It had all kinds of spyware and I helped him with a fresh install. I've got xp and everything else running, however when he went to to play a dvd he was met with this response:
To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer. If you do not have a compatible DVD decoder installed, DVD-related commands, options, and controls do not appear in the Player and you cannot play DVDs. By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder. For more information about DVD decoders, see the DVD Support in Windows XP Web page at the Microsoft Web site. The problem is when he got the computer he didn't get the software package the computer was sold with. So I'm at a loss. I think I've downloaded everything I can from windows. Toshiba the DVD distriputer wasn't much help and the HP site was much help either. The system is a HP Pavilion xh 226 The DVD player is a toshiba sd-c2402 Any help would be greatly appreciated |

If HP doesn't have the software available for download on their site, he is going to have to get DVD playing software from somewhere else. Perhaps somebody else on this site knows of a freeware DVD player.

You will need to buy PowerDVD or WinDVD, you can find basic or OEM versions pretty cheap.
