System Freezes While Formatting

I just purchased a SATA hard drive (Western Digital Caviar 120GB) and tried installing it for the first time and I encountered many problems. The drive is detected by BIOS but when I create a partition and try to format the drive (full format, not quick) the format freezes at 1%. It has stayed like this for over 1 hour and I doubt the format process takes this long. This is the 2nd drive I try to use because I had the same problem (except it would freeze at 0%) and I returned the drive thinking it was defective.

I have a Gigabyte GA-8I915PL-G motherboard,
the hard drive is a WD 120GB SATA like I previously mentioned.

I am attempting to install Windows XP. If anyone can help or if you need more info, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

I had a friend who recently attempted to install his new hard drive, Western Digital just changed its way of installing a hard drive, so attempting to do it the old way which i am familiar with will be unsuccessful. Your best bet is to contact western digital's website or help-line so they can inform you on how to install the new drive, sorry I wasnt more of a help. Good luck.

After an hour and a half it went up to 2% (showing signs of life?) I guess there's no harm in letting it run for a little longer and see if anything happens? Is the process supposed to take this long? It's weird because it went from 0 to 1% in like 15 seconds, and then took 1 1/2 hours to jump to 2% complete...

Download and run the WD diagnostics. That drive should take 45 minutes max to full format.
