How do I remove the Hdd and do back up?

Hi PC Guys & Gals,

I am very new to IT Technical support. As this is my first job, I struggle to do my work especially when it comes to removing components inside the PC.

Can you guys help me how do I remove the HDD which has corrupted files when I did the XP Pro upgrading. My colleague was fuming at me cos she hasn't back up her data...So I am thinking of removing the Hdd and install it to another PC as a secondary IDE to do the back up.

How do I do that? Is there any websites that show step by step (including pics) on how to to do it? I am really devastated...I need your immediate help!!!

Thanks so much!!!!

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

If it's a desktop: Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet> Open the case and locate the hard drive> Unplug the power and data cables> Unscrew the 4 screws holding the hard drive in the drive bay> Remove hard drive from case and install it in the other computer> Start the computer and go into BIOS to be sure the hard drive is recognized> Boot into Windows and then start Windows Explorer> Locate the new hard drive and click on it to expand the directories> Locate important files and make copies of them to the other hard drive.

Did you already install WinXP Pro? Did you upgrade or did you do a fresh install? If you formatted the hard drive prior to installing WinXP Pro you won't be able to get her files unless you use some kind of data recovery software.

Hi Cricket,

Thanks for replying to my messsage..It's a desktop...I have inserted the second HDD into my PC however, it was unknown or unrecognised...Do i need to find another PC which has Win XP installed and back this up??? Currently, I inserted this HDD (OS is Win XP) into my desktop which is Windows 2000.

I think I have followed all the correct steps included setting the jumper, BIOS and everything but it still shows as unknown with warning sign...

regards

You may need data recovery software.
