Root of C: freezes explorer--not in safe mode, tho.

Windows XP Pro SP2
"My Computer" shows all drives--double clicking on C: shows a blank window and explorer freezes. I can use task manager to "end program" on C: which restarts explorer.

Via a short cut to a directory on C: I can explore sub directories but any attempt to view the root of C: freezes explorer.

Through properties of the C: drive, I ran check disk to no avail.

The problem does not occur in Safe Mode--I have access to the root of C: in Safe Mode.

In all other respects the computer seems to run fine.

I think this happened after I attempted to install GTK+ which I have since uninstalled sucessfully using the uninstall program.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

I have run across this problem many times. It is caused by malware. Run antivirus and antispyware programs in safe mode a couple of times each, rebooting after each scan, if you have updated versions of these available. If you do not have network connectivity, prepare to dig into your OS.
