I want to convert to USB 2.0 but my older sony viao only has 1 usb port on the front panel and 1 usb port on the rear. While all usb 2.0 pci cards I've come across have a minumum of two ports side by side. I'm unsure how to proceed. Please help!

You won't be removing those old ports, just adding the new ones via the PCI card you are looking at buying. If what you are questioning is that front port, and how to make that one 2.0, then what you'll do is when you have the PC open to add the new card, look and you'll see the wires coming from the front usb port to a spot on the motherboard. You'll want to disconnect those from where they go into the motherboard, and connect them to the proper place on your new add on usb 2.0 card. The manual you will get with the card will specify how to make the connection.
