Problem with PC stuttering
Hi all, here is my configuration:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz 530 800MHz FSB LGA775 Asus P5GD1 (latest BIOS as per www.asus.com) Platinum 1GB DDR (2x512) 400MHz Dual Channel (PC-3200) MSI PCX-5750 PCI-Express 128MB Promise Ultra133 TX2 IDE Controller (BIOS version 2.20.0.15) Antec Sonata-II with SmartPower 2.0 450W I have been a multiple-poster lately, trying to pinpoint the problem with my PC. In the past, I have had multiple PC freezes, the PC not even turning on at all, stuttering, etc. I bought a new case last week as listed above to make sure that my power supply wasn't the problem. I haven't had any problems turning on the PC since then. The only remaining problem seems to be with "stuttering" - when I play audio or video, the sound/image sometimes skips for 2 or 3 seconds at a time. Sometimes the stuttering is constant and I have to reboot. The other thing I noticed is that when I look at the mouse, I sometimes see it "stuttering" as well in the form of a pause when I'm moving it around. My next step is buying a new mobo (Intel 945P) and RMA'ing my existing one. Does anyone have any suggestions to try anything before I embark on that process? Thanks |

I'm not familiar with your other threads. Have you tested the memory and hard drive(s)? How bout updating video and sound drivers?

If I were you I would go to the HTPC forums. They deal with video and audio problems like that alot. I'm a member of them too.

I should have said that the video drivers are up to date and the audio drivers too. The P5GD1 has on-board audio so I don't have a separate card. I would definitely think it was either audio or video, but the mouse "stutters" too...
The hard drives are not the problem since I've swapped them in/out and the same problem is there. I don't think the memory is the issue since I'm not getting blue screens or any other memory-type problems... |

What kind of background programs are you running on that computer? Anti-virus, firewall, etc...list them all.

I am running Norton Anti-virus and Internet Security as well as firewall. The other reason that I think there's something wrong with the mobo which I forgot to mention is that everytime I turn on the PC, the time is wrong even it's set correctly before exiting.

Try disabling the Norton products. In the past Norton System Works would mess up the system clock. Wouldn't hurt to see if the Internet Security or AntiVirus has anything to do with the problem.
Try replacing the motherboard battery. Cricket
