DVD Burner Problem
I have ran into an interesting problem today. I recently built a new system (listed in my signature) using a Lite-on DVD burner and for the first time I tried using it to burn a DVD of videos I have of racing. The DVD I burned with the Lite-on optical did not work in the DVD player I have used to play DVDs burned on my son's computer that has a HP Lightscribe DVD burner. To make a long story short as a trouble shooting exercise, I put the newly burned DVD made by the Lite-on burner in the HP burner and made a copy of it. The HP burned copy would play on the DVD player that would not play the same videos burned with the Lite-on. What gives?? Is there a problem with the Lite-on burner? I can play it's DVDs on both system's DVD drives, just not the DVD player. Do I need a new player to play the DVDs made by the Lite-on.....I am confused. I am using Nero as the software for both.

It's a long shot but have you checked what book type the lite-on is using?
read this if you don't know what i'm talking about:http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-bo...ing-Bitsetting heres a separate utilty from lite-on:http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm |

I'd say that could very well be it. Use the booktype utility to burn the disc as DVD-ROM, and it should be readable in any player. I believe it must be a +R disc for that trick to work, tho.

rios__, Kov-Ice,
Thanks guys...I used the options in Nero StartSmart and changed the book type. Unfortunately it did not work when I burned another DVD (DVD+R) to try it out. |

Grrrr, I even tried burning to a DVD-R with the same results...I get a message saying DISK ERROR when I try to play it on the home DVD player. Odd how it works with disks burned with the HP Litescribe burner on the other machine. I have been following Bill Lane's saga with his Lite-on too as I have the same model. |

I think I'd try the Lite-On booktype utility rather than doing it through Nero. Do you have the latest firmware on the drive?

I burned a disc using a DVD-R to rule out booktype problems....same result DISK ERROR message when the player tries to play a DVD burned by the Lite-on. I went to the Lite-On website yesterday and there is no firmware or drivers available yet for this model "Lite-On SHW-160P65" I am at a loss as to what to do next. Would uninstalling it and reinstalling it in device manager be worth a try? Just to cover all the bases and give as much info as possible...I have the optical installed alone on the primary IDE plug using an 80 wire cable at the end, with the jumper on the optical set to cable select. The hard drive is on the #1 SATA plug and is a SATA II WD 250Gb HDD. I'm using Nero 6 Ultra software and XP-Pro operating system. |

Well I feel rather foolish....I Googled "Lite-On Troubleshooting" and got to a page that had Firmware data for the "Lite-On SHW-160P65"
![]() I took Kov-Ice's suggestion and downloaded it and successfully updated the firm ware and tried to do a quick burn of a short video to DVD (this is starting to get expensive) ....bottom line, same doggone problem I thought that it would be the fix but alas it was not to be.

Well, I finally gave up and traded my son...my Lite-On burner for his HP burner. I tried the DVDs that my Toshiba player would not play in another player and they played fine, so it is the player not liking the DVDs burned by the Lite-On for some reason....same media, same data/videos.
Still bugs me as to why though. |

I've had similar experiences in the past and have concluded it's an interaction between burner-media-player. Certain combinations just don't work. The older the player, the more likely you are to have problems/incompatabilities.
