Hey all,
I'm thinking to soon upgrade my ram to 256mb on my athlon system. I'm using an Athlon 550 and one of the first athlon boards there was, the MSI 6167. When I built the system last year and memory prices peaked I didn't worry too much about the quality of memory. I eventually ended up buying what was supposed to be IBM 5.5ns pc-133 ram, 128mb's of it, for a little over 200 dollars. I don't know if it really was IBM ram, I couldn't tell by the chips. Anyway this ram has worked fine since. I'm now for the lookout for another 128mb of pc-133 to add to my system. Having heard many stories of problems with ram and athlon systems are there any good brands out there, I have been looking at a stick from mushkin for $138, but was wondering if I could go with cheaper stuff. Do the problems with ram related mostly to the via chipset? My board only has amd chipsets, so I'm wondering if it maybe could handle some cheaper memory too. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in Advance! |

I have used Micron RAM that is Athlon approved with no problems. Check out this link: www.3dcomputers.com I bought 192 Megs from them a few months ago when RAM prices were a bit cheaper. I think I spent like $155 or so. HTH

Whoa... their prices must have gone up today. Yesterday, they were about $10 cheaper for a 128M stick.

Micron/Crucial is definitely good ram. Very stable. |

The AMD chipset does hold one advantage over the VIA-KX133: It can support the upcoming "Thunderbird" chipsets. AMD said they weren't going to make many Thunderbirds in SlotA though. Those bastards wanna make Slot-A absolete ASAP, favoring SocketA instead.
As for RAM, I have cheap generic junk and it works OK. I think my computer might be faster and a little more stable if I had gotten better RAM. I think slightly-cheaper-than-Mushkin RAM like Micron/Crucial or Samsung will work fine. ------------------ Life without computers would be like the world without war. |
