Intel P4 3ghz Presscott Way tooo HOT !!!

I haven't been able to get my cpu temp below 40c ...I've practically tried everything..Motherboard ASUS P5P800 , 4gb Transcend RAM ,coller Swiftech MCx775v...Everything installed absolutely the right way , no mistake on the cpu and heatsink installation..Thermalpaste is Arctic Silver 5 and applied strictly according to the instructions.contact between CPU and heatsink is flawless..Where the heck am I going wrong..? My CPU temp shows 46c in BIOS idle and I haven't even installed the OS yet.. and all the rest of the system has top notch components... CPU was an OEM cpu..would that make a difference..? Somebody told me that my temperatures are actually really good !!! with intel prescott P4... Is that for real? I thought swiftech was a good cooler and I read the reviews everywhere and their results are as
good as 32c idle..how the heck they do it... My air flow is superb both intake and exhaust is balanced and inside of the case is literally a fans galore !! I remember reading an article somewhere that said different versions of the Intel pentium 4 has different heat dissipation..and Retail is better than the OEM and presscott is the worst..anybody knows anything about this ? I tried everything and am about to give up..and change my CPU to a lesser ghz one... What version of P4 should I get ?

For a Prescott-core processor, those are indeed some mighty fine temperature readings.

46^oC is very good for a Prescott Core Processor. Lesser clockspeed won't get you too far below 45^oC. Unless your system starts to lockup/throttle down, you're in fine shape.

Prescotts run much hotter than other P4 chips. Mine is water cooled and runs in the mid to upper 40's. You dont really have to worry about heat on a P4 much because if it gets too hot it will throttle back as, kram mentioned, in order to keep from burning itself up.

Are you sure the low temps were for a Prescott 3.0GHz and not a Northwood (which do idle around 32-36C)?

Ambient room temperatures will affect the CPU and system temps. The lower the room temps, the lower the CPU and system temps will be. If the room the computer is in has fairly warm ambient temps, it'll be reflected in the CPU and system temps.

Wether it's prescott or northwood is not mentioned.. you might be correct on that but if Both versions are same speed then everybody would prefer Northwood..Is there a tradeoff for producing less heat ? . I do professional audio..my main audio calculations are done in a dedicated PCI hardware so CPU load is not heavy and most important thing for me is stability and quietness.. In a recording studio environment Noise is the first concern...Fans aren't too loud but I would like to slow them down...I use VL systems L.I.S for fan control.. So If Northwood runs cooler I would definitely choose that what is the tradeoff though ? when I go online to purchase CPU's they never mention the type..but they indicate model numbers..what would be the part number for Northwood 3ghz P4...
Thanks guys for the feedback..It made me releived that my temps were OK..cause I actually went ahead and bought Koolance EXOS2 for my system but never had the guts to install it..the idea of water leak is just horrifying fear for me considering I have an expensive protools card in there..so each time I gathered up some courage to go ahead and do it..I lost sleep over it and chickened out ...I guess I will just purhase the Northwood CPU for this dedicated audio workstation and save my prescott CPU and water cooling system for my next general desktop system..I am a watercooling newbe...

It is getting VERY difficult to find Northwood core P4's now - especially higher speed 800 FSB models. Plus, good socket 478 motherboards won't be around much longer.

That's a LGA775 CPU there, I don't believe there are any Northwoods for LGA775 (I may be wrong though).

But, yeah, those are pretty good temps.

Oops...didn't see the motherboard mentioned in the first post. You're right, no LGA775 Northwoods exist.

Dude those are great! My 2.8GHZ P4 Northwood 800FSB runs at 45C idle! Of course I need to put on a new cooler really :S

WOW after reading that i feel reallly good about my temps. I also have the same processor. Slightly overclocked. And i even turned speedstep off. I know i shouldnt lol. Well my idles were 28-30c and full load is 50-52c. But those are also normal temps. Those prescotts are mighty tough. You dont have anything to worry about. And like the others said, as long as its stable, its fine.

My idle temp is around 35-38c. Lately I've had a couple of spikes at 60.3c. My alarm is set at 60.4 so it's gone off a couple of times. Surprised the hell out of me till I traced the mysterious beeping to the alarm.

My question at the time was what the hell was my pc doing? I quit applications one by one till I found the culprit. I recenetly upgraded to Beyond TV 4.1. The process to update the channel guide was using huge amounts of the CPU -- up to 85%. The only other change I hagve made is adding two more sticks of 512 ram.

Do I dare raise the alarm a couple more degrees?
