Monitor

While working with my computer the other day, my EMC 19 inch monitor screen closed in from both sides to the center, and went completely black. After this the monitor started clicking. I then hooked the monitor up to another computer. This time it just clicked, and it stayed black.

Do you have any idea what is causing this problem or how I can fix it? For instance, could it be a loose solder joint, or something like a relay.

I hope it's something fairly obvious.

Also, I would like to know how to drain the high power voltage from the back of the monitor. I used to do it with television sets, but forgot how to do it.

Thank-you,
Don

you lost your horiz deflection, and probily the high voltage, and boost voltage too. most likely the boost rect went bad, after opening the case, takr a screw driver and hook a wire from the screw driver to the ground of the monitor, then slip the tip of the screw driver under the largs rubber cap at the end of thr hv wire that goes to the crt, you will jump when it arcs, but it cant hurt you this way, unless the ground wire comes off the screw driver, the clicking is the power relay opening and closeing because of the problem.
it aint no differant than a tv, so be carefull.

oh yeah, almost forget, unplug it from the computer and the outlet first.

Thanks Bailey for the reply,

It was greatly appreciated. Most people wouldn't have touched this question with a 10 ft. pole. No matter what I do, fix it myself, or have it repaired, I will post back here on what exactly was wrong with the monitor. Yes, even if I throw it away.

We have to put a disclaimer in here - if you are not an experienced technician, do not do this. There are voltages HAZARDOUS TO HUMAN LIFE inside a monitor.

OK I opened the case and drained the power off, and since I don't have a schematic, I need to know what the BOOST rect looks like. Is it that big black thing that sort of looks like a automobile coil, or what? Also, is this a part that needs soldered in, or is it a plug in?

I want to mention one other thing, I take full responsibility for whatever happens here. I'm a big boy now, and I'm fully aware of the high voltage in this monitor. However, I may have to give up, and go down in defeat, but not without a fight.

EMC 19"
product number: SA-986
Model: 986M

Go here: http://www.bithose.com/serfaq/REPAIR/F_faqfil.html
Scroll down to "Computer and Video Monitors".

They might have the info you're looking for.
