cloning small drive to lge drive.(how to)

in attempting to copy my small hard drive to a new larger one it failed to transfer the boot files ......i foillowed the instructions i found on hte net which stated that the easiest way was to copy and paste....however firsdt you had to open windows explorer and click on view\options.........there is no win explorer on my version of winxp sp2. So i re formated the 40 gig hdd and loaded win xp sp2 and then tried to copy all programs across as it was set up as slave, but the new hdd will boot but with an older version of winxp so he programs wont run.
I have tried right click on the start button and then 'explorer' but here is no 'options' tab in the menus.can you assist me to transfer all the contents of my 8gig drive to the new 40 gig. including the boot facility.........and it must be free. Specs........amd 1000 cpu 390 mgs sdram dvd cd . 400 watt power win xp \sp2 updates are up to date. avg lavasoft..etc

You cannot use the old explorer/copy and paste method to clone an XP drive. You need 3rd party software. You can download setup software from WD, Maxtor, or Seagate (depending on who made your new drive, you have to use their software) that will do a drive to drive copy for you. You will have to download the appropriate version and create a bootable floppy or CD, that's how you have to run it.
