I would suggest that you sve yourself a lot of money and get a Mustek UB from wal-mart for $59.00. been useing one over two years now and does a great job on photos and everything else.

Avery, seems I just read about scanners somewhere here, but it seems that it isn't the brand of scanner but the software you use. I have a UMAX 2000p and it works great; even with the software that came with it.
Software quality can make or break it.

You can't beat an HP for ease of use and quality. Their scanner driver is the most user friendly out there. Agreed on the software - until you get into high end scanners, the software they all come with is pretty basic. Just stick with USB or SCSI - parallel port scanners are dog slow and tie up the port.

It really just depends on why you want a scanner. I just bought an Astra 6400 Firewire scanner. It is quite fast but a bit more expensive than some of it's USB cousins. I do quite a bit of scanning so speed and image quality are essential. Software is a big part of what you pay for in a scanner. My last scanner was a Microtek SCSI scanner. It came with a full version of Photoshop 5.0. The scanner cost $300 but if I had to buy Photoshop, it would have cost me $600. Go figure.

You don't say what OS you are using. Windows 2000 can be more picky about scanners than Windows 98. I couldn't get my Firewire scanner to work at all in Windows 2000. I think because I installed the scanner first and not the software. After an unrelated format and re-install, it works perfectly.

Ouch that's gotta hurt. I think that parallel scanners were one of the worst things ever invented. Of course, they were before USB so your only other choice was a SCSI scanner. You should be able to find a good USB one in a UMAX or HP or Astra in the $59-89 range. Check here at PriceGrabber for your best deals.
