DVD Drive Tracking Servo Failure

I have a Plextor PX712A DVD Burner that has been working in my computer for about 2 years. Last night I was unable to burn using DVD Decryptor. The error I got was tracking servo failure. With other burning programs, I did not get an error but it kept saying media wasn't present. The media I am using is Memorex DVD+R. However, I was able to record onto the same media about 15 times without any problems.

It seems to read discs OK.

Time for a new DVD burner?

That would be my first guess. The tracking servo error does point to an internal drive issue. Even Plextors don't last forever.

Any recommendations regarding a new drive? I'd probably go for dual layer if I have to get a new drive.

All the new drives are dual layer now. I'd look at Lite-On, NEC, and Pioneer. Of course, if you don't mind a premium price, there's always another Plextor.

Newegg special. NEC drive for $37.00. You can't go wrong.
